Breaking News: International Human Rights Commission Condemns Unilateral Removal of Governor Similaya Fubara*

In a strongly worded statement, Ambassador Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure, Head of Delegation (Africa) for the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), has condemned the unilateral decision by President Bola Tinubu to remove Governor Similaya Fubara of Rivers State from office. This move, described as “reckless and unconstitutional,” has plunged Nigeria into a state of lawlessness, undermining the country’s 26-year democratic journey. By disregarding the rule of law, President Tinubu has demonstrated a willingness to trample on democracy. The IHRC has emphasized the importance of upholding democratic norms and the rule of law. The removal of an elected Governor without due process is a flagrant violation of these principles, setting a perilous precedent that threatens the foundations of Nigerian democracy and the separation of powers. The situation is further complicated by Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with electoral irregularities, including non-adherence to qualifications, rules, and widespread rigging. The arbitrary removal of elected officials will only exacerbate this crisis, pushing the country toward a state of anarchy. The IHRC is urging the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and world leaders to take immediate action to address this constitutional crisis. Ambassador Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure is calling on the UN to condemn this unconstitutional action and demand that the Nigerian leader respect the rule of law and the democratic process. The IHRC will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the protection of human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria. As Ambassador Dr. Tivlumun Innocent Ahure emphasized, “Together, we can ensure that Africa’s largest democracy remains a beacon of hope and democracy, where the rights of all citizens are protected and respected.”
